Fast, Light, Sharp and Cheap – The Canon 50mm f/1.8 EF II Lens
Filed under: canon camera lenses

http://www.robnunnphoto.com The EF 50mm f/1.8 belongs in the camera bag of every Canon photographer – it’s Canon’s cheapest lens, yet this great little prime offers sharp images, great low-light capability and fantastic selective focus options.

The 50mm is more like the 35mm equivalent of an 80mm on a crop sensor camera, it’s slightly telephoto, so you’ll find yourself moving back a little if you’re into landscapes – but it’s a great portrait focal length.

Build quality isn’t the best – but what do you expect for £100? Get one, stick it on your camera and have some fun.

Cheers, Rob.

Oh, and did I mention it’s cheap? ;-)

    @menoziinrevoltado …
    @menoziinrevoltado You have to look at this as a great feature, if you know how to use it. When it’s focussing to (nearly) infinity, like with a landscape shot, you don’t have that much problem at lower apertures to get everything in focus. I suggest reading some articles about use of aperture widths.

    DON’T DROP IT! I dropped mine and it blew up. Ridiculously fragile lens. Canon should get it’s butt kicked for producing such a piece of trashy plastic!

    @willieturnip

    lol. after reading my question again.. I feel so dumb.
    Recently I’ve been reading and learning about lenses.
    The lower the f number, the beter the bokeh, better in low light condition, shallower depth of field and sharper picture. I didn’t know alot of things before.

    Btw, recent compact from samsung has 1.8 lens. But ofcourse, DSLR will always be better than compacts.

    @HatroVille Why are …
    @HatroVille Why are you looking at DSLRs if you don’t care about a shallow DOF?

    You can do almost everything a DSLR can do with a compact these days, apart from this.

    Everyone bangs on …
    Everyone bangs on about how noisy this lens is. Yes there is some noise, but having heard your video, it isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Going to invest in one of these soon.

    @menoziinrevoltado …
    @menoziinrevoltado Er… no.

    The beauty of the 50mm is that you can have that selective focus look at the larger apertures, say f/1.8 to 3.5, but then you can stop down to say f/8 or f/16 for shots where everything is in focus.

    Cheers, Rob.

    So, the camera will …
    So, the camera will always have one point in focus and the rest blured. I couldn’t photograph a landscape if I wanted because everything would be blured. So, it’s a secondary lens because everybody want a lens that can focus a whole landscape as well as a primary lens. Damn, I’ll have to change my camera choice because this is fixed all the time. ARGH!

    What you’re saying about the polarizing filters not rotating is a good point.. I haven’t thought about that. I have this lens myself and find it incredibly sharp at 2.0 and 2.8. That’s my favourite aperture for this one :D

    The 50mm f/1.8 can …
    The 50mm f/1.8 can blur the background (or foreground) more than a 3.5 lens.

    This lens is much sharper than a kit lens at the same apertures. Shoot at f/5.6 or f/8 and it’s as sharp as any lens out there, including “L” lenses.

    Having a 1.8 aperture means that, if you have to, you can shoot in low light levels, even indoors without a flash, without having to pump up your ISO too high (which causes noise).

    Being a prime lens (no zoom) it forces you to move, improving your composition skills.

    I’m quite new to …
    I’m quite new to understanding Lenses…is it that with F1.8, you can blur the background MORE than the kit lens which is F3.5 -5.6?

    So this lense is bacally about Blurring the background more? if only that’s the reason, why big hype? …
    I wanna learn more that’s all, not insulting anyone or any product.
