Canon PowerShot S90 Review – Part 4
Filed under: canon camera reviews

If you are interested in seeing pictures from this camera I will be posting them at this link:

http://fakeconomy.com/2009/10/canon-powershot-s90-review/

I just got the Canon S90 PowerShot and I wanted to show you the camera since there hasn’t been a lot of in-depth videos posted about the features.

The S90 is basically a scaled down version of the G11 Canon’s – an Elph with full manual controls. The camera is built almost completely out of metal and has a sturdy build quality to it. The front of the camera has a manual control dial which can be fully customized to control anything from apeture to exposure compensation.

The LCD is pretty impressive too, fairly wide for a camera with excellent resolutions, the camera also has image stabilization and a f2.0 lens with a 28mm-105mm focal range.

    @CarlyUTube If I …
    @CarlyUTube If I can get to a store and try it out for myself that would be great. I have a Canon Power Shot S5 and as much as I like it, it is still too big for me. I find that I just don’t want to carry it with me like I thought I would. The S90 and SX 210 are the right size for me. I know I would take ithem every where, plus I could still do more then an avg. point and shoot Decisions, decisions! I hear that the iphone takes great pictures. Thanks.

    HD …

    @CarlyUTube
    HD video is one thing, I bought an iPhone 4 so that satisfies my HD video needs but if you want it in a camera then it might be a reason to buy something else.

    As far as zoom lenses go, it really is more about what you plan on shooting. My personal style is to focus on wider angles and shorter focal lengths. I typically don’t take pictures of anything less than 20-30ft away (unless it’s a landscape).

    I have not used the SX210 myself so you should check out other reviews.

    Hi again, I keep …
    Hi again, I keep coming back to your reviews of this camera because it is so much of what I want BUT… not being able to really use that zoom lens the way I would like and not having HD is holding me back. I have also been looking at the Canon SX210 IS. Love that it has a great Optical Zoom and HD. Have you an opinion on that camera? If they could have put these two together. I would be happy to spend 350. or so.

    I use Lightroom 2.0 from Adobe to edit my photos. The majority of time I’m adjusting white balance, saturation, contrast, fill light and shadows. I try to compose while shooting so I don’t need to crop photos during editing.

    You can make the same type of adjustments with just about any decent photo editing software. A great free option is Google’s Picasa which does 90% of the edits that I frequently use.

    Are you …
    @hrag500

    Are you talking about taking photographs or HD video? There is no such thing as HD pictures, but you might be talking about High Dynamic Range images which involves post processing work in a program like Photoshop.

    Some of the best consumer/professional level cameras are:
    Nikon: D700, D300s, D90
    Canon: EOS 5d Mark II, EOS 7D, EOS 50D

    Then you have to buy the lenses, which can cost thousands of dollars each.

    Can someone tell me …
    Can someone tell me why HD video would be better than this cameras video if the video I see from this camera looks better than the HD videos I’ve seen from other pocket cams on youtube? What’s the advantage of HD? Will HD look better on TV when burned to DVD? Sorry, I don’t know much about cameras & I’m trying to decide between the Canon S90 & Sony TX7. I appreciate anyone’s help.

    I …

    @instantview88
    I wrote about this in a previous reply… Long story short, it depends how big a card you are, but here is the average time for 1GB of memory (just multiply the minutes by whatever size card you are using).

    1 GB = 12 minutes @ 640 x 480
    If you shoot 320 x 240 then you should be able to get 36 minutes/GB (according to Canon).

    Hi! can you test …
    Hi! can you test the max video length until the card is full? I mean, can it record 1 hour straight of video or longer in highest resolution (640×480) without stopping in 40 mins? My 850is shows 66mins video remaining, but stops video recording in 38 to 40mins. How about this S90? thanks!

    Very good reviews …
    Very good reviews of the S90! Do you have reviews covering the ergonomics of the camera? I think this is an excellent camera, but in my opinion and the opinion of many others, the ergonomics are terrible. The body is slippery, It’s easy to block the pop-up flash, easy to accidentally hit the wrong buttons (especially when letting another snap your picture), and the rear control dial moves wayyyy to easy. Shame on Canon. It seems that the Richard Franiec custom grip would help immensely.

    The control dials …
    The control dials are assigned functions depending on the shooting mode you are in.

    Manual (M) – Front = Aperture / Rear = Shutter Speed

    Aperture Priority (AV) – Front = Aperture / Rear = Exposure compensation

    Shutter Priority (TV) – Front = Shutter Speed / Rear = Exposure compensation

    Program (P) – Front = ISO / Rear = Exposure Compensation

    Honestly I haven’t even tried to program the S button to do anything yet. I’ve found the standard controls useful enough…

    Very informative …
    Very informative video. Good work!

    I do have 2 more control questions though: Is it possible to give 2 functions to the 2 diles? Say shutter speed to the front dile and apperture size to the back dile? And what does that shortcut button do to the contols? Lets say you put shutter speed under the s button, then is the s button a toggle switch (press once to use funtion, and once more to turn it off) or replaces the s button the function chosen to the diles?

    Depends on what you …
    Depends on what you mean. There are two ways to blur a background (actually, probably more). But yes to both with this camera

    1) Depth of field (what I think you mean) – using a large aperture (f2.0). The further your subject is from the background (more distance) will make the background look more blurry.

    2) Moving a camera while shooting a moving subject. Say you shoot a car and pan the camera with the car’s movement, the car will look still but the background will look blurry.
