I suspect with …
I suspect with batteries that have a 10 or 20mAh difference, you aren’t going to notice much of an effect anyway. It’s when you have one 900mAh battery that expires while your 1690mAh battery is still trying to pump juice around the circuit that the problems could begin.
Having said that, a few people have commented that they have never had such a problem, so I am guessing this precaution is one of those that started with an older inferior version of the grip and won’t go away.

Never had a single problem with any of my batteries and/or battery grips, even though batteries weren’t equally charged every time.

Don’t worry, you can use different batteries with the grip. I’ve been using a Canon NB-2LH (7.4V/720mAh) along with a Hahnel (7.4V/740mAh) in my Canon BG-E3 for over two years, while I still had the 400D. That same combination is still working great for a friend of mine who bought my old camera. I now have a 30D and I’m using a Canon BP-511A (7.4V/1390mAh) and a DELTA (7.4V/1400mAh) in a Meike BG-E2 battery grip.

Actually thinking about it, I have not actually checked whether the “aperture wheel reverse direction” setting on the main body is also applied to the wheel on the battery grip. To the testing machine!!!!

Canon support are quite happy to let you ruin a non-serviceable unit, because you’ll be needing to buy another.
