Are the fittings/controls compatable? Can i use canon A1 Camera lenses on the canon 350 d body?
No .. when Canon redesigned their cameras in the middle 1980′s, the dumped the fine A1 and FD lens system and introduced the EOS cameras with EF lenses … totally not compatible with each other.
For a while, there were some adapters (with an internal lens), but they were both very expensive and many of the converted lenses could not focus at infinity.
At this point you are really buying a new camera system with all new lenses.

Last month a pal bought a snazzy digital Canon body, and found his 35mm Canon EOS650 lenses worked a treat

You need a Canon FD to EF adapter. Here’s a link describing it:

But considering the cost of the adapters, it makes more sense to simply by a new lens.

No. They are completely incompatible lenses and you risk serious damage to your Rebel camera. The A1 uses FD lenses and the Rebel 350 uses EOS lenses… kind of trying to use a Nikkon lens on a Canon
You will need to buy new lenses or try your luck with an FD-EOS adapter
